Fun Friday and Fall Foliage

It’s that time of year again, and the leaves are beginning to change! The weather is supposed to be nice this weekend, so it would be a good time for walking or hiking and taking in the colors.

Try This: Plan out your meals ahead of time

Who plans their meals for the week ahead of time?

Below are some benefits:

Saves money– you have an automatic grocery list, so you will no longer be purchasing items that you do not need or will not use. It also keeps you from eating out as often.

Makes it easy to stock pile and get the “Good Deals”– After a few weeks of meal planning, you’ll be able to pick out what items you eat the most. You can use your meal plan to stock up on these high consumption products when there are good sales.

Less waste– I can’t count the number of times that I have thrown out good produce or leftovers because I never got around to doing something with them. With a meal plan you can plan your menu around what you have available or what needs to get used.

You know what’s for dinner– No more waiting until 7pm for your family to decide what they want to eat. Also, dinner prep is easier because you know what items need to be taken out of the freezer, what needs to be marinated, etc.

You can plan around your schedule– Have a busy night and not enough time to cook? Why not try a Crockpot item that is ready when you get home from work?

Gives everyone something to look forward to– Take turns choosing what’s for dinner and try new recipes. Make dinner something more than just a “have to”.

TRY THIS: Plan out your meals next week. If you already plan out your meals, make a menu board so the whole family can see what’s for dinner.

Tuesday’s Treat 9/25

Eating healthy does not always have to make you miss out on those tasty treats you enjoy. Making homemade deserts can cut down on fat intake, as well as be a fun kitchen activity for you and your family or friends. If cherries or chocolate are your desire, this cupcake recipe is sure to please. Food Network has a great variety of healthy deserts and meals that could help shape your everyday eating habits.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup toasted almonds, coarsely chopped
  • 1/2 cup dried cherries, coarsely chopped
  • 6 ounces dark chocolate, finely chopped

Directions

In a medium bowl, toss together the almonds and the cherries. Line a baking sheet with waxed paper.

Melt half the chocolate in the top of a double boiler over slightly simmering water, over the lowest possible heat, stirring frequently. Make sure the water is not touching the top pan. Remove the double boiler from the heat and stir in the rest of the chocolate. Remove the top pan with the chocolate in it, gently wipe the bottom of it and set it aside for a moment. Replace the simmering water in the bottom pan with warm tap water. Put the pan of melted chocolate on top of the warm water. This will keep the chocolate at the right temperature while you make the clusters.

Stir the fruit-nut mixture into the chocolate. Spoon out heaping tablespoon-sized clusters of the chocolate mixture onto the baking sheet about 1-inch apart. Put them in the refrigerator to set for 15 minutes. Store and serve at room temperature.

ENJOY!

Motivation Monday 9/24

Monday morning motivation….need a bit? Here’s a quote that boosted my spirits. Enjoy!

Motivation is a fire from within. If someone else tries to light that fire under you, chances are it will burn very briefly.” ~ Stephen R. Covey

Fun Friday-iPhone5 released!

I thought it would only be appropriate on this FUN FRIDAY to talk about the release of the iPhone 5! I don’t plan on getting the new iPhone (I have a 4S), but I find the hype and craziness surrounding this phone to be fascinating; one lady waited in line for 8 days (iPhone 5 sale draws huge crowds)!

What does the new phone offer? Check out this short video on ABC- Top 5 Features. Interestingly, the new phone also came with a software upgrade iOS6 which will improve other Apple products as well.

How many of you ordered the new phone? What other devices do you use to help you with your health goals?
